Tomas Martin Lopez was born in Brooklyn, New York of Puerto Rican decent. He was fortunate to have been surrounded by musical people and in a home where music was a staple. Tomas soon was attracted to learning how to play percussion instruments and studying Afro Cuban, Puerto Rican and jazz music. Further musical inspiration came from residing in Puerto Rico as a young child.
As a teenager in New York, he attended East Harlem Music School then met and was mentored by the late Fred "Tims" Munar, a multi-talented percussionist and timbale player for jazz vibraphonist Bobby Paunetto. Soon he showed an ability to play several percussion instruments proficiently and started performing with salsa bands in New York City. Salsa singer great Tito Allen and Roberto Rodriguez Sr, NY's first tier trumpet player of the Fania All Stars and many historic bands recognized his percussive and vocal talent and encouraged him to sing.
Tomas has recorded and performed with Latin and jazz music greats. Billy Cobham, Mark Egan, the West Point Jazz Knights, Louie Ramirez, Ray De La Paz, Lalo Rodriguez, Paquito Guzman, Adalberto Santiago, Felo Berrio, Cheo Feliciano, Ismael Miranda, Azuquita, Oscar Hernandez, Jerry Galante and Orquestra Broadway are examples of a few artists he has played with. He has performed in world renowned venues such as the Village Gate, Madison Square Garden, The Beacon Theater, The Apollo Theater, Palladium, S.O.B.s and at domestic and international gala venues for the World Salsa Congress. 2009 Grammy nominated with The New Swing Sextet and travels throughout the U.S., Europe and Asia bringing his unique talent to the international salsa scene.
Tomas's passion for Afro Latin and Brazilian jazz has him moving forward as an artist/producer to bring these genres to the public ear and venue's featuring top musical talents.
Tomas also has co-produced Salsa dance & Latin Jazz music with his Brother Carlo Lopez of The Echo Park Project from Los Angeles, CA
